Weather, rental demand, school terms and Stampede season: a month-by-month look at the best time to move to Calgary.
There is no single perfect month to move to Calgary, but there are clearly easier and harder ones. The best time for you depends on three things: the weather on moving day, how busy the rental market is when you are searching, and the date your job or program starts. This guide walks through the year so you can pick a window that works instead of one that fights you.
The Short Answer
For most people, late spring (May and June) or early fall (late September and October) is the best time to move to Calgary. The weather is usually workable, the roads are clear, and you avoid the two busiest rental rushes of the year: the late-summer student wave and the July crowds of Stampede. If your start date is fixed, the next best thing is to secure your room a few weeks early, whatever the season.
Winter: December to March
Winter is the hardest season to physically move. Cold snaps can push temperatures well below -20°C, sidewalks and loading areas can be icy, and daylight is short. Calgary's famous chinook winds can bring sudden warm spells mid-winter, but you cannot plan a moving day around them.
The upside is the rental market. Fewer people move in winter, so you often have more choice and less competition for the same room. If you are arriving with a suitcase rather than a truck full of furniture, a winter move is far less painful than it sounds, and January is a natural start date for anyone beginning a winter semester.
- Pack a proper winter coat, boots and gloves in your carry-on, not the moving box
- Choose a home close to a CTrain station so winter commutes stay short
- Allow extra time for flights and road travel in case of storms
Spring: April to June
Spring is unpredictable early on. Snow in April, and even in May, is normal in Calgary, so do not assume spring weather until late May. By June the days are long, the river pathways are open, and the city is at its most welcoming. Rental demand is moderate: busier than winter, but well before the late-summer rush.
May and June are a strong choice for professionals starting new jobs, and for students who want to arrive early, find their feet and maybe work a summer job before classes begin.
Summer: July and August
Summer has the best moving weather, and that is exactly why it is busy. The Calgary Stampede takes over the city for ten days in early July, and short-stay accommodation gets expensive and scarce around it. From late July through August, students arriving for the fall semester at SAIT, Mount Royal, the University of Calgary and Bow Valley College add to demand for rooms near transit and campus.
- If you must move in summer, start your search four to six weeks ahead
- Avoid booking temporary stays during Stampede week if you can
- Expect the best-located rooms near the Beltline and campus routes to go quickly
Fall: September to November
Early September is still busy as the student wave settles in. From late September through October, though, the market calms down, the weather is often crisp and sunny, and moving is easy. The first snowfall can arrive in September or October, but it rarely lasts. By November, winter is on its way, so earlier in the season is better if you have the choice.
Match the Move to Your Start Date
In practice, your start date matters more than the season. A few rules of thumb:
- Students: arrive one to two weeks before classes to set up transit, a phone plan and a bank account; see our guide to commuting to SAIT, MRU and UCalgary
- New jobs: move at least a few days before your first day, and use a shorter first lease while you learn the city
- Contracts and assignments: line the lease end date up with your contract, with an option to extend
- Newcomers to Canada: a furnished room means you can land, unpack and start working on paperwork the same week
Where to Live When You Arrive
Most newcomers start in the inner city, especially the Beltline, because it is walkable, close to downtown jobs and on the CTrain. If you are still choosing an area, read our guide on where to live in Calgary first.
